Description:

To direct and lead the data science team and associated air transportation research activities in the Oxford-Emirates data science lab. Drive enterprise transformation projects through the application of mathematical modelling, machine learning, problem structuring and big data analysis to solve complex business problems. Follow the digital footprint of the customer throughout their journey and design sophisticated algorithms that aim to reinvent the customer experience in a way that significantly enhances the airline’s revenue.

The job holder is a focused individual who is able to transcend the world of theory, bring it to life in the business context and collaborate successfully with cross functional teams including academic researchers, business stakeholders and information technology teams.


Lead and manage the Emirates staff in the data science lab. Ensure close collaboration with the Oxford staff and build a culture that makes the lab a great place to work and maximises productivity.
Access and leverage the full resource and potential of Oxford University. Network across the Oxford faculties, including mathematics, social sciences, engineering, robotics and computer science, to build relationships and bring new skills, perspectives and experiences into the data science lab.
Develop, formulate and execute big data models to solve complex air transportation business problems. Research, design, implement and validate cutting-edge algorithms to analyse diverse sources of data to achieve targeted business outcomes using mathematical models, machine learning, operational research theories and dynamic simulations. Identify patterns and build prediction models to forecast future demand, including pricing elasticity studies, origin and destination consumer demand, customer willingness to pay and customer value models.
Work with cross-functional team members, combining computer science and mathematics, to identify and inject high-value actionable insights into business processes at their point of highest impact. Work in quick iterations, using the techniques and algorithms best suited for solving the challenging problems of the aviation business.
Develop and recommend enhancements to existing tools with the goal of advancing the data science capabilities of the organisation. Perform validation and testing of models to ensure adequacy and reformulate models as necessary.
Ensure the lab has the appropriate quantity and quality of data plus associated technical infrastructure, to solve the targeted business challenges of the airline industry for the EK Group.
Clearly document and communicate the outcomes of the data science initiatives and make sure that the insights and findings can be clearly understood and translated into action.
Be responsible for ensuring all lab activities are in line with industry best practise to enable Emirates to be recognised as a leader in data science. Provide expertise on mathematical concepts for the broader applied analytics team and inspire the adoption of advanced analytics and data science across the entire breadth of our organization.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE


Qualifications:
PhD in a relevant field such as data science, operations research, mathematics, science, data mining, artificial intelligence, applied statistics, machine learning or economics.

Experience:
Airline or other industry related experience

More than 3 years work experience in at least 2 of the following disciplines:


Machine learning and predictive modelling
Data mining
Mathematical programming and optimisation
Information retrieval
Natural language processing
Control theory
Game theory

In depth knowledge of at least 3 of the following:


Statistical analysis tools such as R, Weka etc.
Programming languages such as Python (including libraries such as scikit, panda etc), Scala, Java, C/C++
Hadoop-based data mining frameworks including Spark, Hive, etc.
Big Data prototyping tools such as Knime, RapidMiner, Pentaho etc.
Open-source graph databases such as Neo4j
Mathematical programming solvers such as Cplex, Gurobi, Xpress etc.
Numerical computation tools such as Matlab, Scilab etc
