Senior Internal Controls Specialist 12 Month Term



Purpose: Reporting to the Manager, External Reporting & Internal Controls, this position will be responsible for providing leadership in continuously improving the control environment and governance processes at WestJet. This position will work closely with business partners, primarily internal to WestJet, in identifying risk areas and solutioning, recommending, and implementing effective controls, processes and policies to mitigate risk exposure.



Responsibilities:



CSOx Program

Administer the annual program from beginning to completion including working closely with the Internal Audit and Advisory team and business units to provide support and guidance on risk identification, process documentation, process improvements and the remediation of control deficiencies and weaknesses.
Facilitate the quarterly CSOx sub-certification process.
Acting as a business provider in assisting WestJet in identifying risks, control gaps, key controls and policy development while adhering to regulatory requirements.
Communicate formally, both written and oral, on the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting to members of senior management.
Keep abreast of all emerging regulatory requirements and business changes and implement sustainable solutions to meet the needs of the business while ensuring compliance.



Policy Process

Implement an effective finance and corporate-wide policy framework to provide consistent guidance around policy requirements.
Draft, issue, communicate and provide education around finance-related policies.
Monitor the effectiveness of the process and implement solutions to make continuous improvements.
Administer compliance monitoring around policies where required.



Business Partnership & Mentoring

Participate actively on project teams to support the business in the identification of financial reporting risks, potential mitigation strategies and early control identification to support the CSOx program.
Proactively partner with business units on process improvements, deficiency remediation, documentation, policies, and other internal control elements.
Provide guidance and support to Internal Controls team and contribute to creating a positive team environment in the ER & IC team.
Ensure collaboration between Internal Controls and Audit & Advisory Services on the CSOx program.



System Monitoring

Develop & drive implementation of an effective corporate-wide framework for monitoring user access to key systems which have a financial reporting impact.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

Completion of a post-secondary education in Business Administration/Commerce (Accounting or Finance) is required
Accounting Designation (CA, CGA, CMA) highly preferred
Previous internal controls experience highly preferred
Minimum 5 years accounting post-qualification
Strong understanding of 2013 COSO framework and CSOx requirements
Technical accounting knowledge of IFRS
Attention to detail, organized and thorough
Strong desire for continuous improvement
Self-starter and strong willingness to take the initiative
Demonstrated ability to drive change, with experience in stakeholder management and change management
Strong ability to influence and work effectively with senior leaders internally and external to WestJet
Demonstrated ability to be a strong internal business partner with a collaborative, business focus
Ability to handle pressure and meet tight timelines in an environment with a high volume of activity
Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills for communication to external and internal guests in addition to guiding peers
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
Maintain a great sense of humour amidst a fast-paced and dynamic environment
