Description:

The Senior Linux Administrator will be responsible for working with the Systems Support team specialising in administration and support of Linux servers, applications and services, from 1st to 2nd level capabilities, ensuring 24/7 availability of all Linux servers associated web sites, applications, services and meeting all agreed SLA’s. The Linux Administrator will be supporting the integration of new initiatives and projects within the production server/application environment(s). Reporting to the Systems Support Manager but working very closely with our Linux Administrators and other members. -

Requirements:

Senior Linux System Administrator with strong customer service and production support experience.
Detail oriented with strong follow through skills. Candidate must be capable of taking responsibility for a task and managing it through completion. Manages time and shifting priorities effectively and maintains a positive attitude in the face of varying and sometimes conflicting business requirements. Identifies creative ways to achieve success.
Strong written and oral communication skills; capable of writing usable technical documentation, documenting and following recurring procedures, training internal customers in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interfacing with other teams.
Has a proven ability to analyse requirements, estimate work involved , map project dependencies, and be able to communicate with non-specialists in the area
Strong analytical problem solving skills; understands how other aspects of the IT environment such as firewalls, DNS, network design, storage architecture, and tiered architectures can impact local systems.
A solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; writing scripts, system installation and configuration, automated monitoring systems, security hardening, automated management, patch management, installing third-party software, and resolving open source dependency requirements.
Delivering and making install and configuration guides.
Disciplined planning and management of changes designed to improve the stability, performance, and security of product platform(s). Candidate should be experienced with formal change management procedures, documentation, testing, validation, and rollback plans.
Fluency in written and oral English



Skills to include some or all of the following:

6 – 8 years experience
Expert understanding of a Linux distribution, preferably RHEL based.
Knowledge of scripting tools (such as bash/awk/sed/perl/python).
System monitoring tools (Nagios, Catci, MRTG, PRTG)
Knowledge of open-source technologies (apache, samba, java/j2ee, tomcat, sendmail).
Hardware skills from server installation and configuration (HP/DELL).
Knowledge of virtualised environments.
Knowledge of Database (MySQL and Oracle specifically).
Supporting Java based applications for Production systems
Experience working in a production environment
Automated deployment and management of systems using Puppet, Chef or similar
A passion for Linux
