Accountant- Capital Assets 14 Month Term

Reporting to the Manager, Operations Finance, this position is responsible for preparing the capital asset forecasting and variance analysis, and working closely with members on the team to ensure all capital assets are recorded and reported in compliance with IFRS & WestJet policies.

Month-end capital asset accounting tasks, including:
Preparation of complex aircraft and non-aircraft capital month-end entries
Assessing expenditures against capitalization criteria for proper accounting treatment
Assistance with the review of month-end capital asset reporting package, including asset additions, disposals, transfers & amortization.
Quarter-end capital asset accounting tasks, including:
Preparation of several capital asset note disclosures for inclusion in the Notes to the Financial Statements.
Review of balance sheet reconciliations for capital asset accounts
Quarterly capital asset reporting
Budgeting & Forecasting

Preparation of capital acquisitions and amortization monthly forecasting
Analysis of monthly/quarterly capital acquisition and amortization variances versus budget, prior forecast, and prior year
Lead role in the development of the annual capital budget, including analysis of project and departmental capital funding allocations during the course of the year
Support the Corporate Planning department in providing capital guidance to investment communities

Establish consistent asset tracking processes ensuring WestJet is accurately and efficiently handling all additions, movement or disposals of its assets
Facilitate the capital expenditure review process ensuring all departmental capital spend is monitored in accordance with WestJet policies
Active role in the ongoing compliance of C-Sox controls, and capital process improvement
Key contact to assist other finance members and departments in providing clarity on the requirements for accurate and complete capital asset and project accounting and ensuring the appropriate and consistent application of the Capital Asset Policy
Assist in the completion of other (non-capital) month-end Corporate Accounting tasks, including open purchase order reporting and various balance sheet reconciliations.
Active member of the Operations Finance team, able & willing to complete other duties as assigned to assist members of the Operations Finance team
Ability and desire to mentor and coach Accountant II – Capital Assets in a collaborative and inclusive manner
Active member of the Finance team willing to complete ad-hoc requests and be flexible in completing any task
Responsible for C-SOX compliance as it relates to capital assets, including updating process documentation, maintaining effective internal controls and maintaining evidence of the operation of these controls.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

Completion of a post-secondary degree in a related field (i.e. Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting or Finance)
Completion or working towards completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA, CMA, CA)
Minimum 5 years experience in an accounting role with progressing levels of responsibility. Capital asset experience would be considered an asset.
Working knowledge of IFRS, particularly with respect to PP&E and Intangible Assets
Positive attitude and collaborative approach to problem-solving and work tasks in general, with an appreciation for the inter-relationships and inter-dependencies in various functions
Adaptable & flexible, with the ability to prioritize to meet deadlines in an environment of continuous change
Skilled at dealing with large volumes of activity and data, and handling multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy
Possess strong communication skills to provide guidance and/or instruction to peers in the organization
Superior analytical, creative problem-solving and organizational skills

Previous experience with JD Edwards strongly desired, experience with other ERP software and reporting systems (ie Hyperion) considered an asset
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
