Reporting to the Head of Taxation and working within a small but high performing team, this newly created role will see you responsible for the R&D (research & development) tax compliance and tax advisory function for the Qantas Group. This is an exciting opportunity to partner with the business with an end-to-end approach to ensure R&D claims are maximised and that we are able to identify their full value whilst ensuring that we comply effectively to AusIndustry requirements.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Ensuring that the Qantas Group claims all eligible R&D projects arising out of new ventures, acquisitions, commercial and product initiatives
Ensuring documentation on projects (including trials and tests) are adequately drafted (real time) to comply with R&D requirements
Partnering with the business segments in providing tax advice on various initiatives, strategies and other transactions with respect to eligible R&D
Managing and facilitating external regulators under audit, review and ACA relationship
Advising on R&D tax matters including liaising with regulators and making relevant submissions on R&D matters
Filing and lodging R&D annual returns, completing R&D tax return schedules for the Group, completing annual and periodic information requests from Government departments( such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics)
Liaising with the ATO and AusIndustry in relation to R&D matters as they arise and support the other Manager Taxation positions in managing the tax compliance and associated tax risks associated with R&D claims
Requirements:
What you’ll bring to the role:
Demonstrated technical capability in the area of R&D tax incentives
Previous tax manager experience at a Big 4 accounting firm and/or within another large corporate
Tertiary qualifications in accounting/finance and/or also engineering (possibly aeronautical or IT)
An acute commercial lens with demonstrated business understanding in the areas of Engineering, Maintenance, IT and Loyalty in order to be well suited to identify areas of eligible R&D at Qantas
The ability to understand the context of discussions and have conversations at the right level both the ‘high level’ summary of risks and benefits and also equally comfortable delving into the technical detail on a particular project
The ability to clearly present how the R&D tax incentive applies in the context of Qantas, and ensure that any changes in the R&D tax landscape that may affect Qantas are communicated clearly and on a timely basis and assist in making submissions where appropriate
Demonstrated positive working relationships with key stakeholders within AusIndustry/ATO
Experience in the air transport industry, in particular related to R&D tax compliance (highly regarded)
Superior written and oral communication skills
Negotiation skills and confidence in dealing with senior counterparties
